Chapter Seven

Since I'm not sure, under the crushing weight of the ungraded first AND second quizzes of the year, as well as painfully boring Back-To-School Night this week, when I might get the chance to update livejournal, and I want this out these before October starts....let me just take care of some things quick.

Fan fiction fans- don't be mad. Don't be disappointed. But I feel that it is only fair to let you know that fan-fic is no longer a priority. I have cut a deal with myself and the hubby. If I can get a short story published- not even paid for, mind, just published- I can justify the expense of shipping the kids off to daycare next summer instead of being stuck in a humid, sticky hell smelling of apple juice and mac-and-cheese, playing dress-up princess and escape-the-kids-with-a-movie-and-afternoon-quiet-time-for-two-hours-a-day. He'd be fine with daycare, published or not- it really was my conscience and my choice to torment myself this summer- but I need to justify it to myself. So- my free writing time is focused on "real" writing. I have several stories started, one close to ready for sending out, I think (give it a month.)

This doesn't mean that my unfinished fan-fic are unloved orphans. I plan to finish outstanding fan-fic favorites like Ranger's LIttle Girl and Family Gathering. It just won't be before Christmas break, at the earliest, and far more likely to be next summer. Ranger's Little Girl is actually therapy for me in dealing with my oldest (who has been sent to the daycare director's office- the preschool equivalent of the Principal- twice in two weeks for her "attitude problem." Her words, not the adults'), so depending on the Elder Flower's moods, you may see more of that sooner.

As for real writing- I am reading, or trying to, to get better at writing. Another pull on the limited time, but days like these- where I am up for hours in the night because of Fibro pain AGAIN- I seem to get a bit done as I am exhausting myself for the next day (Teaching thee subjects back to back for six periods is much more difficult in pain and exhausted than just in pain, but  I have no control over whether my body lets me sleep or not, and I can't see wasting the time tossing and turning uselessly in bed.) So if you have any suggestions, especially short stories, I would love to hear your suggestions. A friend has graciously pointed out some good stories by Raymond Carver and James Salter to help me with a story I am working on. I can honestly say that for a writer, I am very unread. If it's genre (and not sci-fi), there's a good chance I've looked at the title in the bookstore and passed it over in favorite of a limited group of  authors that I used to read almost exclusively (Jennifer Roberson, Mercedes Lackey, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Tony Hillerman, JA Jance, and Janet Evanovich.) I am not great literature girl, despite my English degrees/certifications and love of Shakespeare, sad to say. There was a time when, if it was written in modern English or after 1600, I hadn't read it unless it was required for a survey class, and I could care less. I haven't read that much more yet, but at least now I care!

One time-sensitive plug that I have to get in here is my writing friend Paul Elwork's first novel, The Tea House, is coming out soon (October) from Casperian Books, a small press. I have been trying to work on a review to post here- but it's not finished/I'm not sure how to really review books, and I don't want to miss the release date without saying something. So-

The Tea House an amazing little book- I always knew Paul was talented, but this novel really hit a chord, from the first line on. "The girl who would speak for the dead stood alone on the cobblestone drive after the rain." Those lines just gripped me, and it got better from there. I have always been interested in the spiritualist movement, the idea that people could fool themselves so thoroughly by frauds, and that the 'mediums' had such balls (and acting ability) to make it so easy for people to do so. That is the history that The Tea House primarily deals with, although in telling the story of Emily and Michael's family (the two children at the center of the story), other time periods, including slavery, are visited, albeit briefly. The real beauty of the work is the language, the images that are so well described that you can't help but see it in your mind's eye as you read. Paul's ability to describe the tea house of the title, and the river, make them full characters in the story, silent-yet-not observers, in the background but not forgotten, to the novel's events. Regina, one of the main elements of the story, is a dead relative who exists in nothing more than an old photo discovered dusty and hidden in an attic. You never 'see' her alive, yet Paul manages to make you feel as if she is a presence as clearly as if she spoken herself, and was not just spoken about.

I don't mean to gush- and this 'short' review got longer than I had originally planned once I started talking about the novel. As talented as Paul is- as good as the novel is- I have a little personal push, too. The Hubby took the photo for the cover, photo shopped it, and the author shot as well; his name is on the inside cover! I think it's so cool, while Hubby argues that its not.

At any rate, the book is available October 1st, I believe; you can pre-order it now via all the usual routes (amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc) or directly from the press. I, of course, am special enough to have a signed advanced copy :) but I ordered copies as well to donate to my school and my high school's library. Paul is also doing a bunch of readings in the Philadelphia area, some of which I will be at reading tarot cards. And while I am discussing writing and talented writers, I encourage you all to check our sarcasmo's corner this week, because Sarcasmom had reposted some really good original Star posts. Reading it, I remembered the original posting; at that point in time, I only periodically checked Star's blog, not every day (that was later.) So the fact that I remember it is pretty amazing. Her voice is so clear and strong, it's almost as if she were still here. I can hear her laugh, and the humor that never left her voice when she spoke. Sigh. I still miss her.

I don’t want to flood “the market” with Season Four speculative fan-fic, especially as AU as this one. I was toying with the idea of continuing the pregnancy from Maelstorm Fill-Ins, as several readers were slightly disgruntled that the story line was dropped. Woo-hoo! The book I have been waiting for a year for is here! Lean Mean Thirteen, by Janet Evanovich, is in stores!

I know that Evanovich is not a great author- you have to like the genre, I'm pretty sure, to like the books- but I love this series. It's one that got me heavily into fan-fiction, the fandom where I actually completed my first novel length story. I can't wait to read it- which, of course, will have to wait until the kiddies are in bed. I may be up half the night to finish it.

I really have this one all mapped out, it's just been a bitch trying to find the time to force it out onto the computer screen. This is not my favorite chapter; it was difficult to write and kind of plods along. It includes aspects I thought necessary for logical plot development. Feel free to correct me, though, because I just really didn’t enjoy this one. Maybe you will.

I actually ended up cutting this one short, to be continued in another short chapter later, just so that I can post something NOW. I am going to a local writers conference in two weeks, and I wanted to have this finished by then, because I am sure that I will come back with a thousand new ideas- hopefully for original fiction.
