that vision thang - January 20th, 2008

Jan. 20th, 2008 10:04 pm another new, interesting word....

Found another new, interesting word in my reading, in an article about the possible role the oil industry might have played in the Katrina flooding. The article itself was quite interesting-- how the wetlands of the Delta have been affected by fifty or so years of oil drilling and pumping. So I share the article and the word with you......

PIROGUE

A pirogue is a small, flat-bottomed boat of a design associated particularly with West African fishermen and the Cajuns of the Louisiana marsh. These boats are not usually intended for over-night travel but are light and small enough to be easily taken onto land. The design also allows the pirogue to move through very shallow water and be easily turned over to drain any water that may get into the boat. The pirogue is usually propelled by paddles that have one blade (as opposed to a kayak paddle, which has two). It can also be punted with a pole in shallow water. Small sails can also be employed. Outboard motors are increasingly being used in many regions.
